Demeter knows loss more deeply than most gods ever will. She was the second child of Kronos and Rhea, swallowed by her father alongside her siblings and freed only when Zeus overthrew the Titans. She claimed dominion over the harvest, the grain, the fertile earth—everything that grows and feeds the mortal world. But her greatest story is one of heartbreak.
Persephone, her beloved daughter with Zeus, was the light of Demeter's existence. When Hades fell in love with the maiden, he asked Zeus for permission to take her as his bride—knowing Demeter would never consent. With Zeus's blessing, Hades split the earth open while Persephone gathered flowers in the Vale of Nysa and dragged her screaming into the underworld.
