He comes to dreamers wearing human faces—the faces of loved ones, strangers, anyone he chooses. Morpheus is the god of dreams, son of Hypnos the sleep god, grandson of Nyx the primordial Night. His name means 'Fashioner,' derived from the Greek word for form, because he shapes himself into whatever human appearance the dream requires. Among the Oneiroi—the dream spirits—Morpheus alone possessed the skill to visit the dreams of gods and kings. His brothers handled lesser work: Phobetor took the forms of beasts and birds, Phantasos became rocks and water and trees, but Morpheus appeared as people.
