His father Kronos, the Titan lord of time, had learned that one of his children would overthrow him—just as he had overthrown his own father Uranus. So Kronos swallowed each child the moment they were born: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon, all consumed and imprisoned within him.
When Rhea bore Zeus, she refused to lose another child. She hid the infant in a cave on Mount Dikte in Crete, where nymphs nursed him on the milk of the goat Amaltheia.
